presets
I put this together really fast so I wanted to just use as little as possible. Makeup and Vanity set made an album or something with just a Mini Moog and a LinnDrum and that seems like a great idea to steal I mean borrow. That being said, this was done with the Arturia Mini V, which is a Minimoog, and the Stymon BigSky Plugin. I don’t entirely know how to dial in my own sound so I rely on presets so here’s them for the Mini V.
- Bass - JassBass
- Pad - Agape
- Arp - We Were Young
- Lead - Ensemble
I typically go to the JazzBass for a synthwave-y bass but the rest were pretty much randomly chosen. Again, this game together really fast so I didn’t want to think about it too hard. The only thing I did tweak for all of them was to turn off all the advanced effects Arturia has built into the presets. This is mostly just built-in delay and reverb. I knew that I was going to hit them pretty hard with the BigSky so I didn’t want it to get too much more washy.
This was my first time using a BigSky though after window shopping it for a while. I’m hesitant to get new hardware so, in theory, this is the perfect solution for me. I landed on the “Bloom” mode and then set most of the knobs to noon and I wasn’t upset with the sound, honestly. I have other reverb things but somewhere between Bloom and Cloud is the sound I associate with the BigSky.
I used this one setting on every instrument and then changed the mix for certain parts of the song. The lead, for instance, has more BigSky to push the lead back so it’s a little less abrassive. I don’t know how other people use the BigSky so I wasn’t sure if one send with the BigSky would be better than multiple instances for each instrument but that’ll be some experimentation whenever I get the time later.
